
Design in Ms Word:-Design Tab helps you to maintain your page by different designing option like applying themes,styles, colours,fonts, paragraph spacing, effects and more.
Design Tab have divided into 2 Group:-
- Document Formatting Group
- Page Background Group

Applying Themes
Apart from the background, there are other formatting elements such as font size, front colour and graphical effect that play an important role while designing. In world these formatting elements can be easily and quickly applied to the entire document by using themes. A Themes refers to a collection of fonts, colour, effect and background for the document.
Let us perform the following steps to apply a themes in a document:-
- Select the Design tab.
- In the themes group, the themes button. A list of the available themes appear.
- Select the desired theme that you want to apply to the document. In this case we have selected the Aspect theme under built in the document now appear.
After you have applied theme to the document, you can customise it by changing the theme colours, theme fonts, or theme effect. Colors include colours for the text, background and hyperlink. Theme effect refers to the different line and fill effect that change the way certain graphical object look.
Let us perform the following steps to change the theme colors, theme font, and theme effects:-
- Select the Design Tab.
- To change the theme colors, click the Theme Button in the Themes Group. A list of theme colors appear.
- Select the desire theme colour on the list you can also create anything colour by selecting create new theme colour.
- You change the theme fund click the theme font button in the theme group a list of theme front appear.
- Select the desired theme fund on the list. You can also create new theme fund by selecting create new theme fonts on the list.
- To change the theme effect click the theme effect button in the themes group are list of theme effect appear.
- Select the desired theme effect on the list.
Page Background Group
The blank documents in Word, by default, have a plain white background and black text. The white background is the ideal choice for most of the documents as it does not affect the readability of the document.
You can change the background by applying a page color, adding a watermark, or adding a border to the page. You can also make a picture to appear as the background of the document.
Applying Watermark
A Watermark refers to a text or design that appears behind the text. It appears in a translucent manner on every page of the document. You can add Watermark to your document with some identifying or distinguishing mark. For instance, you can add the company’s name or the paper manufacturer’s name as a watermark.
Let us perform the following steps to apply a watermark in a document:-
- In the page background group.
- Click the watermark are list of the available watermark appear.
- Select the watermark that you want to add the page of the document. In this case we have selected the do not copy watermark the page of the document now appear.
You can also create a custom watermark to add it in a document. Let us perform the following steps to add the custom watermark:-
- Select the design tab.
- In the page background group click the watermark button.
- Select Custom Water mark on the list.The printed watermark dialogue box appear.
To this dialog box, you can choose to create and add a text watermark or picture watermark:-
- Select the appropriate option to create a text or picture watermark. In this case, we have selected the Picture Watermark option to create a picture watermark.
- Slick the Selct picture button. The insert picture dialogue box appear.
In this dialog box you need to locate and select the picture that you want to add as a watermark to the document:-
- Select the picture that you want to add as a watermark. In this case we have selected the picture stored in the my pictures folder on the computer.
- Click the insert button on the insert picture dialogue box. The dialogue box closes the Printed watermark dialogue box.
You can specify if the picture should appear washed out or not. You can also specify how much the picture watermark is to be scaled.
- Clear the washout check box.
- Click the down arrow of the scale drop down list to view the available scaling option.
- Select the desired scaling option from the list. In this case, we have selected 100 % option.
- Click the OK button.
Applying Page Colour
In Word, you can apply solid colors as the Background of the page. There are numerous predefined solid colors that you can choose to apply to the page of your document.
Let us perform the following steps:-
- Select the Design tab.
- In the page background group, click the Page Color Button. A list of the available solid colors appears.
- Select the color that you want to apply as the background for the pages.
Let’s perform the following steps to apply a fill effect as the page background:-
- Select the Design Tab.
- In the page background group, click the page color button. A list of available color appear.
- Select the fill effect on the list. The fill effect dialog box appear.
In this dialog box, you will see four tabs namely Gradient, Texture, Pattern and Picture. With these four tabs, you can apply a gradient, texture, pattern or picture as the page background.
- Select the desired tab in the Fill Effect dialog box. In this case, We have Selected the pattern tab, where you can see different pattern.
- Under Pattern, select the desired pattern. We have Selected the Large grid pattern.
- Click OK button. The fill effect dialog box closes and the pages of the document appear.
Adding a Page Border
You can add a Border to a Single Page, more than one page, or all the pages in the document. There are different types of border that you can add to the pages, for instance, the border can be a solid line or a broken line.
Let’s perform the following steps to add a border to the page:-
- Select the Design Tab.
- In the Page Background group, click the page Border button. The Border and Shading dialog box appear.
In the Border and Shading dialog box. The Page Border Tab is selected by default. On this tab, you can select the type, style, width,and color of the Page Border. The different types of styles, colors and widths are visible under settings style, color and width respectively.
- Select the desired type border. In this case, selected the box border type.
- Under Style, select the desired border style. In this case we have selected the double solid line border style.
- Click the OK button. The Border and Shading dialog box closes and the Selected border appear.
